I Could Not Believe My Eyes When THIS Happened…

I could not believe what I saw today! Something utterly amazing happened. Something that caught me completely off guard.

I know a large portion of the general public has such strong opinions about seeing this sort of thing in public, but I never thought that I would see it with my own eyes! There are so many people that feel the need to speak out against it because it fills them with such contempt and disgust. These people are so adamant that they must voice their opinions to help put a stop to it. I just could not believe my eyes that this was happening to me today! So here’s the story….

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon while out shopping at Ikea, I decided to take a break and sit down for a coffee at the Ikea restaurant to get some work done. I got out my laptop and some papers and took a few sips of coffee. The hustle and bustle of shoppers and the clanging of forks and spoons echoed in the background. As I sat there working on my next article for GuidingLife.ca, I looked over and witnessed something that I had never seen before! Something so shocking that I had to do a double take.

A young lady sat down next to me with a baby in her arms. She had been carrying what looked like some heavy bags and placed them all on the chair next to her. Then she sat down with a big sigh and tried to sooth and console her baby who had started crying a few moments earlier. Looking tired and worn down from a lack of sleep, she began rocking her baby back and forth in her arms. She calmly started whispering to him, trying to quiet him down so as not to disturb the other patrons in the restaurant.

A minute or so later, the crying had stopped and it had grown strangely silent as I looked up from my laptop to see why. That’s when I noticed the mother reaching into her bag and grabbing a kind of half blanket which she promptly wrapped around her neck. It seemed a little strange to me as I wondered how such a tiny blanket could possibly keep her warm. The cool air blowing from the air conditioning did make it a little chilly in the restaurant, but I thought she must have a sweater or something more suitable in her bags to keep her warm.

Then she placed her baby on his back and held him close, covering him with the blanket. My first thought was that the baby had been upset and crying because he was cold. Not having any children of my own, I am slightly ignorant when it comes to the finer details of caring for a baby. But after the baby was resting comfortably in her arms, she began to unbutton the top of her blouse. That’s when it hit me like a ton of bricks! Right here in public, this lady was about to breast feed her child!

I could not believe my eyes! Was I really seeing this? I had never actually witnessed a mother breast-feeding her child in public before, so I was a little unsure of how to take it. I looked around to see how the other patrons in the restaurant would react, trying to see if they were staring as intently as I was at what was unfolding.

Thinking back, I can certainly remember reading stories about people who are adamant that breast-feeding in public was inappropriate. These people would get so outraged that they would publicly scold the mothers, expressing how uncomfortable it makes them to witness such an act.

I looked on in disbelief trying hard not to stare at this young lady breastfeeding her child. I took a moment to think about it and reflect on exactly what I should do. I mean after all, so many people view breast-feeding in public as such a deplorable thing to witness. So after my minute of quiet contemplation, I mustered up the courage, sat up in my chair and did what I thought was right…the only thing I could do:

I turned back to my laptop and continued working!

There was absolutely nothing offensive about it at all. She fed her hungry baby, I continued working on my article and the world continued on as if nothing happened!

No one in that entire restaurant was concerned even one little bit. Everyone just continued eating, talking and shopping as if it was just a normal day.

There is nothing strange about a mother breast-feeding her child in public. It is a natural and completely harmless act and it does not affect anyone except the mother and baby. So why then are people so concerned about it?

Why do they feel so strongly about it? Why does it bother them?

Lately there has been this growing sense of entitlement where people feel the need to express their concern over every little thing that might offend them. Instead of ignoring it and moving on, people are now making it their business and then becoming offended by it. But there is a simple, timeless solution for all of this…it’s called MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS!

Everyone out there needs to know: You are not entitled to give your opinion in every circumstance or judge people because they think differently than you. If it offends you, turn the page and move on. Freedom of expression does NOT give you the right to trample anyone else’s opinions or beliefs.

Truthfully, if you are offended, it says more about your ignorance and intolerance than it does about the actual act of a mother breast-feeding her child.

It takes ZERO effort to turn away and continue whatever you were doing.

So next time you see a mother breast-feeding her child in public, instead of speaking out and trying to impose your ignorant beliefs on her, do both of you a favour and just walk away.

Great article! My wife has mammoth breasts and we have 5 children, so I’ve always noticed people get uncomfortable when she’s fed our children throughout the years.

Not sure why you were at ikea, though…their coffee tastes like a tire. Do you actually like their cafeteria? I guess this not really here nor there.

Anyways, again, great stuff, ladies with the boobs shouldn’t be a surprise to people. Especially my wife with the mammoth breasts. Really irks me. Just the worst.

May the good Lord bless & guide you.
